Statement by Chancellor Friedrich Merz: „You remember, 5 weeks ago I launched the initiative in Kyiv together with other European leaders, aiming to achieve a diplomatic success in reference to opening up peace talks with Russia. This has not been achieved. Russia is not willing to discuss the end of the war in Ukraine.“ „Therefore, we are doing now what have previously announced. There will be more sanctions. The (EU) Commission made yesterday proposals. Next week these might be already issued in Brussels, targeting Russian banks and the Russian energy sector.“ „The answer is clear: we support Ukraine militarily and we will take more measures against Russia.“
