Ukrainian forces advanced up to one mile (1.6 km) in Donetsk, AFU’s Chief said, while Azov units repelled a massive Russian assault near Shakhove, destroying 16 armored vehicles.A Ukrainian servicemen of the Azov Brigade aims their weapon during a military training exercise in the eastern Donetsk region, on Feb. 3, 2025, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Azov Battalion became a household name in Ukraine weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 for its last-ditch defence of the southern city of Mariupol. It held out in bunkers beneath the city’s sprawling metal works before surrendering to the Russian forces that had laid a brutal siege to the city, with most of the Azov fighters captured in the siege still in captivity. Assault units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) advanced up to one mile (1.6 km) in several sectors in the Donetsk region, according to AFU Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky.
“Assault units advanced up to 1.6 km [1.0 miles] in some axes. I thank all Ukrainian defenders who are destroying the enemy. I especially want to commend the defenders from the 33rd Separate Assault Regiment and the 253rd Battalion,” Syrsky said, as quoted by the Ukrainian General Staff via Telegram.
Despite repeated failed attempts by Russian forces to push forward, Ukrainian soldiers conducted search and elimination operations over 3.4 sq. km (1.3 sq. miles) in the Pokrovsk district of the Donetsk region in the past day.
Dobropillya operational successes
As of the morning of Oct. 13, in the Dobropillya operation, 182.4 sq. km (70 sq. miles) had been liberated, and 224.7 sq. km (86.8 sq. miles) were cleared of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups.
Over the past 24 hours, 190 combat clashes were recorded along the entire front line. Ukrainian forces struck seven areas of Russian troop and equipment concentrations, according to the General Staff.

Russian troops attempted to break through AFU defenses toward Mirnohrad and Razine, focusing their main effort on capturing the village of Shakhove.
During the battle, Ukrainian units destroyed nine infantry fighting vehicles, four armored personnel carriers, three tanks, and three motorcycles.
Russian permanent losses amounted to 78 soldiers.
Azov reported that Russian forces again employed their usual tactics: motorcyclists led the first wave, followed by armored vehicles carrying infantry.

Using electronic warfare systems to suppress Ukrainian drones, Russian troops tried to move infantry into settlements to establish footholds, but the assault was completely thwarted thanks to pre-mined territory and coordinated actions of artillery, National Guard units, unmanned systems, and other AFU forces.
Dobropillya backstory
In September, Ukrainian forces seized the initiative in the Dobropillya sector and launched a counteroffensive.
In late September, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that in the areas of Dobropillya and Pokrovsk Russian forces had attempted to encircle Ukrainian troops – but instead, Ukrainian counteroffensive actions have allowed Kyiv’s forces to encircle the Russians.
“We understand that Russia will now transfer personnel there to try to hold their positions,” Zelensky said.
He added that Moscow has already deployed Russia’s 61st Marine Brigade to the area in an attempt to stop Ukraine’s advance.
On Sept. 23, Zelensky told US President Donald Trump in New York that Ukrainian soldiers had managed to surround 1,000 Russian troops during the operation.
